Eligibility Criteria for NEET UG 2024

Eligibility for appearing in NEET (UG) 2024, according to the related Regulations of NMC and DCI are as follows:

Age LimitThe applicant has completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or would have completed that age on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the first year of the undergraduate medical course.
Upper Age limitAccording to letter No. U-11022/2/2022-UGMEB, dated 9 March 2022, received from National Medical Commission (NMC), Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) regarding the upper age limit, there is no upper age limit.
Citizen EligibilityIndian Citizens/Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) desirous of pursuing an undergraduate medical course in a foreign Medical/Dental Institution also need to qualify for NEET (UG).
Number of SubjectsThere will be a total of 3 subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
No. of AttemptThere is no restriction on the maximum NEET UG Exam attempt limit in 2024.
NationalityIndian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Nationals aspirants are eligible to apply

NEET UG 2024 Eligibility Criteria

Provided also that to be eligible for NEET UG 2024, the student must have passed the subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology at the qualifying examination as mentioned in the Regulations of NMC and DCI. Also, they must have secured a rank in the merit list of NEET (UG) entrance examination 2024 for admission to undergraduate medical courses.

In respect of students belonging to SC (Scheduled Castes), ST (Scheduled Tribes), or Other Backward Classes (NCL), the minimum marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology in the qualifying examination will be 40% marks instead of 50% Marks for Unreserved and General-EWS applicants.

In respect of PwBD applicants as per NMC and DCI Regulations, the minimum marks in the qualifying examination in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Botany and Zoology)/Biotechnology shall be 40% instead of 50%.

Provided further that candidates who have studied abroad and seek admission to medical colleges in India must have passed class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English with 50% marks, and Their equivalence should be determined by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as per the rules of the Medical Council of India and the concerned University.

The minimum qualifying marks criteria to be eligible for admission to MBBS courses in AIIMS and JIPMER will be as per the rules applicable to AIIMS and JIPMER. Applicants of NEET UG should refer to the websites of AIIMS/JIPMER.

Criteria for NRI / OCI / Foreign Nationals

Non-resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission to Medical/Dental Colleges subject to the rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institutions, and the (GoI) Government of India.

NRI and OCI applicants/candidates of NEET UG are required to upload a certificate from the concerned Indian Diplomatic Mission in the country of their residence in support of their claim as NRI/OCI candidates along with their online application form for NEET (UG) – 2024. Keep the original of such document with you for production at the time of counseling/admission to the courses covered under NEET (UG).

Similarly, a foreign applicant for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test [NEET] Undergraduate 2024 shall also upload documentary evidence (eg relevant page of a valid passport or a certificate from the competent authority in the country of his/her nationality) in support of his/her candidature in support of his/her nationality, along with the online application form.

The format of the Embassy Certificate and Citizenship Certificate or any documentary proof of citizenship is given in Appendix – XVII A and XVII B. Foreign national authority may confirm their eligibility from the concerned Medical/Dental/College/State.

NEET UG 2024 Qualifications and Qualifying Examination Codes

CODE 1:

Those class 12 students who are appearing in the qualifying examination, that 12th class, in 2024, whose result is awaited, may apply and appear in the examination, but shall not be eligible for admission to the Undergraduate Medical Course if He does not pass the qualifying examination with the required passing percentage at the time of first round of counseling.

Those aspirants who have appeared or appeared in the qualifying examination with English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as main subjects and expect to qualify for the examination with the required percentage of marks may also appear in the Competitive Entrance Examination are eligible to apply and appear. However, their candidature will be considered only if they provide documentary proof of having passed the qualifying examination with the required subjects and percentage of marks. (OR)

CODE 2:

Higher or Senior Secondary Examination or Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to Class 12 Higher/Senior Secondary Examination after 12 years duration of the study with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-Technology in the last two years of such study Are included. (which will include practical tests in these subjects) and Mathematics or any other elective subject with English not less than the core syllabus for English prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training after the start of the 10+2+ 3 Educational Structure as recommended by the National Committee on Education.

Students who have passed the class 12th from Open School or as private applicants will not be eligible to appear in the ‘National Eligibility cum Entrance Test’. In addition, the study of Biology/Biotechnology as an additional subject at the Class 12 level will also not be acceptable.*

Those Students who have passed 12th with Biology as an additional subject will also be eligible for the MBBS entrance examination (as per Hon’ble High Court Order No. 2341/-W/DHC/WRIT/D-1/2019 dated 24th). /09/2019 in Writ Petition (C) No. 6773/2019.

In case the Institute is to consider class 12 as equivalent to the Class 12 examination of an Indian University or a Foreign/University examination, the applicants will be required to submit a certificate from the concerned Indian University/Association of Indian Universities. The effect is that the examination passed by him is treated as equivalent to Class 12 under the Intermediate Science Examination.

The proviso (in italics) has been the subject matter of challenge before Hon’ble Delhi High Court, Hon’ble High Court Allahabad, Lucknow Bench, and Hon’ble Madhya Pradesh High Court Jabalpur. The provisions of the rules disqualifying candidates from recognized Open School Boards and candidates who have studied Biology/Biotechnology as an additional subject have been repealed. The Medical Council of India has given priority to Special Leave Petitions before the Hon’ble Supreme Court and appeals in the Hon’ble High Courts.

Therefore, the candidature of those candidates in NEET (UG) – 2024 who have passed the qualifying examination i.e. Class 12 from National Institute of Open Schooling or State Open Schools or from recognized State Boards as private candidates; OR with Biology/Biotechnology as an additional subject but subject to the outcome of special leave petitions/appeals filed by the Medical Council of India). CODE 3:

Intermediate (or Pre-Degree Examination in Science of an Indian University / Board or other recognized examining body with Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology (which shall include practical tests in these subjects), and also English as a compulsory subject. (OR)

CODE 4:

Pre-Professional (or) Pre-Medical Examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English after passing Higher Secondary Examination or Pre-University or equivalent examination. The Preprofessional/Pre-Medical examination shall consist of practical tests in these subjects and shall also include English as a compulsory subject. (OR)

CODE 5:

The first year of a three-year degree course at a recognized University with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology including practical tests in these subjects, provided the examination is a University examination and the candidate has passed Physics, Chemistry with Must have passed the earlier qualifying examination. Biology / Biotechnology with English as a core course at least. (OR)

CODE 6:

B.Sc. Examination of an Indian University provided that he (or) she has passed the B.Sc. Examination with not less than two of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology)/Biotechnology and further that he/ she has passed the earlier qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English. CODE 7:

Any other examination that is equivalent in scope and standard to the Intermediate Science Examination of an Indian University (studies of the last 2 years of 10+2 consisting of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology; which shall include practical tests in these subjects) is found. / Board, taking Physics, Chemistry, and Biology / Biotechnology including practical tests in each of these subjects and English.
