UGC starts registration for 4 SWAYAM courses

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar announced the opening of online registration for Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) programs/courses on Buddhist Studies on Guru Purnima on July 3, 2023.

The UGC (University Grants Commission) chief tweeted, “On Guru Purnima Day – The first sermon was delivered by Lord Buddha. Keeping in view the importance of this day, UGC has opened enrollment for the four SWAYAM courses mentioned below on Buddhist studies.”

  1. History of Indian Buddhism
  2. Buddhist Philosophy
  3. Abhidhamma (Pali)
  4. Buddhist Tourism.

Jagdish Kumar said that a total of four courses/programs are offered on Buddhist studies, out of which three are being re-launched on the official SWAYAM portal itself due to the overwhelming response from the learners. These four SWAYAM courses are History of Indian Buddhism, Buddhist Philosophy, Abhidhamma (Pali), and Buddhist Tourism.

These SWAYAM Buddhism-related courses are offered free of cost and will be of four credits each. According to UGC’s own rules and regulations 2021, the student is free to transfer his credit. The duration of each course in the SWAYAM Buddhism program will be of 15 weeks and 40 hours in duration.

Registration has started for these courses. UGC Chief said that the courses would be conducted from August 1 to November 14.

UGC has recently started enrollment for the course for Indian Knowledge System (IKS) courses. UGC introduced this 10-week-long program or course to sensitize the students towards the contribution made by ancient Indians in the field of science, philosophy, and related applications and ideas. IKS courses 2023 will start on July 31, 2023.

SWAYAM is a program/initiative launched by the (GoI) Government of India and is designed to achieve the three core principles of education policy, namely, access, equity, and quality. The effort aims/objectives to make the best teaching and learning resources accessible to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM is an official portal of the government of India that seeks to bridge the digital divide for aspirants who have remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.
